Kelfoods donates 50 trays of eggs to Mother’s Fun Run
Poultry and animal feed producer Kelfoods on Monday donated 50 trays of eggs to the Mother’s Fun Run, a safe motherhood initiative championed by Nation Publications Limited (NPL).
With the support of partners, the initiative is mobilising resources for Chitipa and Mulanje district hospitals and their satellite facilities.
Speaking during the handover of the eggs on Monday, Kelfoods representative Yamikani Amasi said they have supported the initiative because their firm produces products that promote good nutrition.
She said: “Eggs contain various trace nutrients that are important for the health of these mothers.
“The eggs contain a wide range of nutrients, many of which are particularly important for the mother and the baby, including proteins and Vitamin D.”
Kelfoods, which produces table eggs, broiler day old chicks and animal feed is well known for Donna’s Eggs, Proto Feeds, Proto Chicks and Proto Vets.
The eggs will be delivered to Chitipa and Mulanje district hospitals through the firms outlets in the respective districts.
Speaking when she received the donation, NPL marketing officer Vanessa Mabviko thanked Kelfoods for contributing to the good health of mothers in the country.
She said: “We are grateful for the donation by Kelfoods to Mulanje and Chitipa mothers. This is the first of its kind. I am sure the mothers will be excited to have the table eggs incorporated in their diet.
“It is our hope that we will continue to work together with Kelfoods in our future events.”
The donation comes a week after NPL staff and partners hiked to Chambe Peak on Mulanje Mountain to raise funds for the initiative.
The initiative seeks to raise K150 million to meet the needs of the two districts, maternity facilities.
Since its inception in 2005, Mother’s Fun Run has been running in each and every year, benefiting various districts.
According to 2018 National Statistical Office data, Mulanje District has an estimated population of 684 107 and 23 health facilities. The district hospital continues to record a rising neonatal mortality rate at 15.2 for every 1 000 live births.
On the other hand, Chitipa District Hospital has a total population of 240 954 and 12 health facilities. Both the maternal mortality and neonatal mortality rates in the district remain high at 156 per 100 000 births and 14 per 1 000 live births, respectively.
